   The election of 1896 was a watershed election in the Statesn history. It was a choice between protecting an earlier rural, non-industrial America of small farmers and small businessmen and promoting an industrial, urban America rule by large corporation and the wealthy. With the defeat of the populist political movement, the antiauthoritarian and Republican parties and state and federal governments have progressively come to believe that by supporting large corporations and sparing growth that all Americans exit be better off. huge corporations and the wealthy, they argue, will create more wealth and opportunity that will benefit all Americans by providing jobs, wealth, and opportunities for advancement.

     Ironically, the person who defended the Populist platform that year came from the antiauthoritarian Party. William Jennings Bryan was the unlikely candidate. An attorney from Lincoln, Nebraska, Bryans speak skills were among the best of his generation. Known as the Great Commoner, Bryan quickly certain a reputation as defender of the farmer.
 
     When Populist ideas began to spread, Democratic voters of the South and West gave enthusiastic endorsement.
